More tragedy: Paula Sims, 56, who is serving a life sentence for the killings of her two baby daughters, on Saturday lost her only surviving son and her ex-husband in a car crash in Mississippi

The ex-husband and son of a woman convicted of killing her two baby daughters nearly three decades ago died in a suspected DUI crash in Mississippi over the weekend.

Robert Sims, 63, and Randall Sims, 27, of Edwardsville, Illinois, were killed Saturday when their Jeep was forced off of an overpass in Jackson, Mississippi, by a Volvo operated by Yolanda McNeeley who, according to police, was drunk at the time of the collision.

Robert Sims was once married to Paula Sims, who is currently serving a life sentence for killing her two-week-old daughter, Loralei, in 1986, and her six-week-old daughter, Heather, in 1989.

Randall Sims was Robert and Paula Sims' only surviving child.

Officer Colendula Green, of the Jackson Police Department, said that Ms McNeeley, 47, was heading south on Interstate 55 when her car slammed into the rear of the Sims' Jeep, which then hit the railing and plummeted from the overpass.

The father and son were both pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, McNeeley took off from the scene after the crash. She was later arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated DUI and felony fleeing.

Robert Sims divorced his wife, Paula, shortly after the conclusion of her high-profile 1990 trial, during which he testified in her defense. He was never charged in connection to his daughters’ slayings.

Paula Sims initially claimed that both her girls, Loralei and Heather, had been abducted by the same masked kidnapper nearly three years apart.

Randall Sims, Paula and Robert's son, was born in 1988, two years before his mother was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of her daughter Heather.

Three months after the conviction, Paula Sims pleaded guilty to concealment of a homicidal death. In return, prosecutors agreed not to pursue murder charges against her in relation to Loralei Sims' killing.

Years later, Sims confessed to the author of a book about the tragic case that she had drowned both her daughters. She claimed that a history of sexual abuse and postpartum depression drove her to commit the murders.

During her trial, prosecutors floated the idea that Paula Sims murdered her female children because she preferred boys.

Illinois state Sen. Bill Haine, who served as a prosecutor when Paula Sims was convicted, told St Louis Post-Dispatch Sunday he was sorry about the deaths of her ex-husband and son.

‘It's sad and tragic and it's another chapter in a continuing tragedy that has followed this family beginning with Paula and the murders of the daughters,’ Haine said. ‘I must say it sounds strange, because I was state's attorney at the time, but I do feel very sorry for Paula. It's a sad chapter in a family history filled with sadness.’
